What are CGI scripts?
A CGI (Common
Gateway Interface) script is a small program written in a language
such as Perl, C or C++ that functions as the glue between HTML pages
and other programs on the Web server. For example, a CGI script
would allow search data entered on a Web page to be sent to the
database management system for lookup. The CGI script resides on
the server and obtains the data from the user via environment variables
that the Web server makes available to it. A CGI library is a collection
of commonly used CGI scripts, whereas a customer's own CGI /BIN
directory would contain CGI scripts used and maintained solely by
that customer.
What types of CGI
scripts are available for free with my INITHost account?
INITHost
provides quite a few free features to help our customers improve
their websites.
Inside of the "Site Toolbox" in the Control Panel is an option for
"CGI applications". Here you will find CGI scripts that will help
to enhance your site. This includes a form handling script, counter,
message board, guest book, and more.
What language
can my CGI script be written in?

- Perl
both perl 4.036 and perl 5.002 are available
- compiler
languages
c, c++, objective c, fortran, pascal*
- shell languages
bash, ksh, csh ...
Where should I
put my CGI scripts?
Your CGI
programs can be located ANYWHERE in your directory. However, in
order to be interpreted correctly, the filenames of your scripts
MUST end in .cgi
How can I test to
see if my CGI scripts are working?
INITHost
has a very useful utility for testing CGI scripts. To use this feature,
go to the "Site Toolbox" from the Control Panel. From there, select
the "CGI Error Check" option.

How can I
register a new domain name?
Registering
a new domain name with INITHost is easy. From the Control Panel,
simply enter the "Hosting Services" category and select "Register
New Domain". You will be able to enter the name of the domain you
would like to register as well as select a hosting plan for that
domain. From here, you can do anything from just reserving a domain
name without a web site (Parking a Domain), to starting a full-fledged
e-commerce account.
What is a
Parked Domain Name?
A parked
domain is a type of INITHost account that allows you to reserve
a domain name, without having a web site affiliated with this domain
name.
In accordance with the Internet's regulations, in
order to reserve a domain name, the name must point to a valid web
server. Most registrars will charge a customer a monthly fee to
have their domain name point towards the registrar's servers. By
"parking" a domain name on Interliant's servers, you will save money
by paying only a one-time set up fee. This is handy if you want
a domain name but don't have a web site to go with it yet. You can
buy the domain name before someone else does, but not pay the extra
fees that the registrar's want to charge you.
When you are ready to start your web site, you only
need to upgrade your INITHost "Parked Domain" account to another
INITHost account type.
How can I transfer
an existing Domain Name?
Transferring
an existing domain name is easy to do. From the Control Panel, simply
enter the "Hosting Service" category and select "Transfer Domain".
How do I create
e-mail accounts with my domain name?

manage your e-mail accounts by logging into the Control Panel and

here you will be presented with any accounts that have been created
previously as well as any of the features that have been activated
for them. You will also be advised as to how many mailboxes are
in use. If you have mailboxes available, there will be an option
for adding more.
Once you click on this button, the first option will
ask you for the e-mail address you would like to create. Enter the
address and press "continue".
Once the mailbox has been created, you can choose
what features you would like to add on. If you like, you can add
mail forwarding and a vacation message here.
How can I get
additional e-mail accounts once our quota is met?
You can
add additional pop mailboxes to your account by selecting "hosting
services" from the main Control Panel menu. From there select "Add/Change
options". There will be an option for "additional POP mailboxes".
Selecting this will present you with the opportunity to add more
POP mailboxes to your account.
How can I modify
our e-mail accounts?
You can
manage your e-mail accounts by logging into the Control Panel and
selecting "Site Toolbox". From there, choose "Email accounts". From
here you will be presented with any accounts that have been created
previously as well as any of the features that have been activated
for them. You will also be advised as to how many mailboxes are
in use. You can edit any previously created accounts by clicking
on the email address.
You will be presented with a screen identical to when
the account was created. From here you can add or remove e-mail
forwarding, vacation messages, and "aliasing".
How do I

What are
the different passwords in INITHost?
There are
several different passwords provided to INITHost customers and they
can be easily confused. Here's a breakdown of each of your passwords
and when you'll need them:
- Customer
- this is the password for the person who is responsible
for the INITHost account(s). A customer can have one or several
INITHost accounts. Knowing this password allows the person to
update demographic information (name, address, tel ephone, etc.),
as well as payment options.
- Account (Domain)
- this is the password for your web site or domain account.
Knowing this password will allow you to make changes to your
web site and to your account services.
- Email -
this is the password to the individual e-mail (POP) accounts.
Each POP account has its own password that provides access to
the specific mail account.
- Directory/File
(.htaccess) - this is an optional feature, that allows you
to password protect specific files or directories on your web
site.
- FrontPage
- If you are using Microsoft's FrontPage web building software
with INITHost, you can create a separate password that only
lets specific people access FrontPage.
How do I change
my Account or Domain Password?
Go to the
Control Panel and select "Account Management". Select the "Change
INITHost Password" option.
How do
I change e-mail passwords?
Go to the
Control Panel and select "Site Toolbox".
Select "Modify E-mail"
You will be given the opportunity to change passwords for any existing
e-mail account.
Note: Individuals can also change their e-mail passwords through
their web browser or e-mail client.
Can I password
protect certain portions of my web site?
Yes. This
is accomplished through the htaccess utility.
A more in-depth tutorial about .htaccess can be found at the NCSA
Web Site.
HTACCESS allows you to restrict
users from your website. You can use it to set up passwords
on your website or prevent users from certain domains viewing your
site. Follow the steps below:
Step
1 |
Create a file in the directory
you would like to protect called .htaccess. The file
should contain the following:
AuthUserFile full/path/to/the/directory/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName protected_directory_name
AuthType Basic
<Limit GET>
require user username
</Limit>
You will only have to fill out the fields
in red with your information. The first one will require
you use the command pwd to obtain your fullpath to
the directory you want to protect. The second field will
be the name of the protected account. The third field will
be the name of a user who will have access to the directory.
NOTE: If you like, you can put
the .htpasswd file in your root directory. Be sure to include
the correct path.
|
Step
2 |
Creating the
password file. Now you will have to create a password file
for the user. Be sure to create the password file in the same
directory as you stated in the .htaccess file. Here is the
command:
htpasswd -c full/path/to/the/directory/.htpasswd
username
You will be prompted to enter a password
in twice. After this your htaccess should be setup. To verify,
try to gain access to the directory where htaccess remains.
A login window should pop up.
|
Advanced
Options - For Multiple Logins and Passwords
You might wish to have multiple logins and passwords. If you wish
to do this you will have to do the following:
Step
1 - Use the following create user command:
htpasswd full/path/to/the/directory/.htpasswd
username
Step
2 - Creating a group file. Using a file editor like PINE,
create a file called .htgroup in a directory under your
account. As mentioned before, be sure to record the location of
this file. The contents of the file should look like this:
my-users:
user1 user2 user3 user4
Step
3 - You will have to make the following additions to the .htaccess
file. Under AuthUserFile, you will have to add the line:
AuthGroupFile full/path/to/the/directory/.htgroup
Finally, under:
<Limit
GET>
add the following:
require group my-users
NOTE:
Make any other appropriate changes.
I can't
contact my web host. What's happening and what can I do?
It could
mean a number of things:
a) There might be an Internet routing problem.
b) Your source connection could have a networking problem.
c) The server is down.
Attempt a traceroute to the website. From the Control Panel, select
"Site Toolbox" and choose the "Traceroute" option.
You will notice different connections being displayed in the terminal.
This is the route the connection travels through from your Internet
Connection to your web site's server. If the traceroute hangs on
one of the points, then that indicates a problem. T here could be
congestion on the Internet, or that point could be down. You can
try traceroutes from different points to locate the exact problem.
You can also try connecting from a different provider if you happen
to have 2 accounts. Internet Service Providers vary on which backbone
connections they use.

HTML?
The best
place to learn HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is on the Internet!
There are a large number of documents on the web to help you write
HTML. Here is a list of helpful HTML references.
What should I
name my files?
HTML files
should end with .html or .htm extensions.
The first file you want people to see (your "homepage") should be
called "index.html". The Unix file system is case sensitive.
So if you put in one of your html files <a href="MYFILE.HTML">
and name the file myfile.html the syst em will not be able
to find it. Gif and jpg file names can end in .gif or .GIF, or .jpg,
.JPG, .jpeg, or .JPEG
The Server will search for several different index files in this
order:
- index.cgi
(if you're running your home page as a cgi script)
- index.shtml
(if you're using Server Side Includes)
- index.htm
- index.html
